The history of the dance card:
A dance card is a card on which the attendee of a formal dance ball can write down her dance
partners for the individual dances of the evening. The decorated cards are produced by the host or
sponsor of the event especially for this occasion and are presented to the ladies at the entrance –
usually together with a ladies' donation.
Dance cards appear to have originated in the 18th century and enjoyed great popularity at balls from
the
19th century and into the 20th century, especially at carnival balls in Vienna.
